Q3 2026 Prejudgment and Postjudgment Interest Rates for Ontario

Ontario has published the prejudgment and postjudgment interest rates that apply to civil judgments for the third quarter of 2026. Both rates are unchanged from the previous quarter.

Ontario interest rates Q3 2026: prejudgment 2.5% and postjudgment 4.0%.

The Ministry of the Attorney General has set Ontario’s court interest rates for the third quarter of 2026, covering July to September. The prejudgment interest rate is 2.5%. The postjudgment interest rate is 4.0%. Both figures match the rates that applied in the first and second quarters of the year.

Which rate applies, and when

These are the default rates under the Courts of Justice Act. They apply when no other rate governs your case, such as a rate fixed by a contract, by another statute, or by the rules of court. The prejudgment rate is tied to the quarter in which you started your case. The postjudgment rate is tied to the quarter in which the court made its order. A case that runs across several quarters still uses the rate for the relevant quarter, not the rate in force today.

The prejudgment rate has held at 2.5% across all three quarters of 2026, after falling from 3.0% at the end of 2025. The postjudgment rate has stayed at 4.0% throughout the year. Both sit well below their 2024 levels, when prejudgment interest reached 5.3% and postjudgment interest reached 7.0%.

The correct rate depends on your quarter, not today’s date.
