Nimbus Is Coming Soon

Soon you will be able to describe the class actions you want in plain language (“product liability class actions in Quebec since 2020”) and Nimbus, Courtready.ca’s librarian, will turn it into a search. Until then, the Search and Filter tab has every filter.

Meet Nimbus

Courtready.ca’s librarian.

Hi, I’m Nimbus. Before we start, a few things worth knowing about what I can and can’t do:

  • I find class actions. Describe what you are looking for and I will turn it into a search of the database.
  • I don’t read case files or give legal advice. I can’t tell you whether you belong to a class, what a settlement pays or when a deadline falls. The case notices and class counsel can.
  • I can make mistakes. I may misread a request or pick the wrong subject, so check the filters I choose.
  • I stay on topic. I only help find class actions in this database. Anything else, I’ll decline.

If that works for you, let’s go.

What Are You Looking For?

Describe the class actions you want in plain language. Nimbus turns it into a search, shows what it understood, and lets you refine from there.

Nimbus picks search filters. It does not read case files or give legal advice, and it can misread a request, so check the filters it shows. 10 of 10 questions left

What You Can Search

  • Subject and province. Subjects from consumer protection and product liability to securities, competition and Crown liability, in every province, territory and the Federal Court.
  • Company and product. Search case titles, parties and class definitions for a company, a product, a drug, a device or an event, in English or French.
  • Status and date. Certified, not yet certified, settled, discontinued or under appeal, as each source recorded it, and the date the case was filed in court (estimated from the CBA’s record when the filing date is not known).

How the Database Works

The Sources Record the Case

Class counsel send their filings to the Canadian Bar Association (opens in a new tab), which lists cases from across Canada, and Quebec cases are entered in the Superior Court’s Registre des actions collectives (opens in a new tab).

Courtready.ca Combines the Lists

Status labels from both sources are grouped into plain categories, a case listed in both is shown once with its source marked, parties are read from each title, dates are parsed, and document names are sorted by type.

You search and open the record

Filter in the browser, read the class definition, and open each source’s documents for the case.

Nimbus, the Librarian

Ask Nimbus in plain language (“product liability class actions in Quebec since 2020”) and it turns the request into filters, shows what it understood, and lets you refine. Nimbus only selects filters from the list; it does not read case files or give legal advice, and it can misread a request, so check the filters it shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Canada Class Action Lawsuit Tracker?

A free Courtready.ca tool that searches the class actions listed in the Canadian Bar Association’s class action database and Quebec’s Registre des actions collectives, by subject, province, company and status.

Where does the information come from?

From the CBA’s class action database and, for Quebec, the Registre des actions collectives of the Superior Court of Québec. Each result is labelled with its source and links to that source’s documents. When both list the same case, it is shown once. Courtready.ca groups status labels and reads dates, but does not change what either source recorded.

How current is a case’s status?

It shows the status recorded by the CBA or, for Quebec cases, the stage recorded in the Quebec Registry. Courts can move faster than any database, so check the court file, the case notices or class counsel before relying on a status.

Am I part of a class action?

This tool can’t tell you. Read the class definition and any notices about the case, and contact class counsel (the lawyers for the class) or your own lawyer.

What does “Certified” mean?

A court has allowed the case to go ahead as a class action. In Quebec this step is called authorization. “Not Yet Certified” covers cases still waiting for that decision, and can include cases where it was refused if the source did not record a refusal.

Why are some cases in French?

Cases filed in Quebec are often recorded in French. Search works in both languages and ignores accents.

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no sign-up. It is not legal advice.

Source

Case records come from the Canadian Bar Association’s class action database (opens in a new tab) and, for Quebec, the Registre des actions collectives (opens in a new tab). Each result is labelled with its source and links to its documents.

Method

Courtready.ca reads the CBA list twice a day and the Quebec Registry once a day, groups status labels into plain categories and shows a case listed in both only once. It does not edit case records. Document names the CBA shortened are completed only where the ending is certain, and marked.

Fair Use

Information only, not legal advice. Check the court record before relying on a status. Nimbus picks search filters and does not read case files. Questions: admin [at] courtready.ca.
