Flight delays feel arbitrary. Compensation in Canada does not. The law sets a strict test. You only qualify for compensation for inconvenience under Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations if three conditions are met. Your delay must be at least three hours. It must be within (and not outside) the airline’s control. And it must not be required for safety.
Most passengers miss the second and third steps. That is why we built the tool “Is the Delay Within the Airline’s Control?”.
It focuses on the most contested issue in flight delay claims. You select the reason the airline gave you. The tool then explains how that reason is typically treated under Canadian law. It distinguishes between events that are usually within control, events that may be justified for safety, and events that are genuinely outside the airline’s control. It also explains the airline’s burden of proof and why vague explanations are often legally insufficient.

Use this tool first. Get clarity on your legal position. Learn if your delay is (i) within the airline’s control, (ii) within the airline’s control but required for safety, or (iii) outside the airline’s control. Then use our Flight Delay Compensation Calculator to estimate the dollar amount you may be owed.
If your flight was disrupted, do not guess. Assess your delay. Then calculate your compensation.
