The Ontario Government has confirmed new judgment interest rates effective January 1, 2026, applying to Q1 2026 only (January 1 to March 31).

For this quarter, prejudgment interest is 2.5%, while postjudgment interest is 4.0%.

Compared to Q4 2025, the prejudgment interest rate has decreased from 3.0% to 2.5%. The postjudgment interest rate remains unchanged at 4.0%.

Prejudgment interest compensates a plaintiff for the time between when a loss occurred and when the court gives judgment. Postjudgment interest applies after the court issues judgment and continues until the debtor pays.
